Abstract

Results of a recent experiment leading to the successful rearing of larvae of Coregonus schinzi palea (Cuv. and Val.) are presented. Dry pelleted diets based on single cell proteins (SCP) (yeast or bacteria) and freeze-dried liver were compared with live Artemia nauplii as first food for coregonid larvae. A significant difference in mortality was observed after 35 days of the experiment between fish fed dry diets (8–10%) and those fed live Artemia nauplii (50%). Larvae reared on live food until the 14th or the 21st day accepted an artificial diet less readily as they became older, mortality rates being 44 and 52% respectively. Increase in wet weight was highest in fish fed Artemia (161 mg individual weight) though two of the three dry diets based on SCP (yeast) also gave very satisfactory growth (98 and 107 mg). It appears that live food can be totally eliminated from the initial diet of coregonid larvae, although fish growth and survival will have to be followed for much longer than the duration of the present trial. The system of rearing used and the dietary composition can well be considered as the primary steps in the rearing of coregonid larvae on a commercially feasible scale.
